Okay Andi, here's where you can help me, as if you haven't done enough of that already (you know I'm so grateful though). It goes Duke & Duchess, Marquess & Marchioness, Earl & Countess, Viscount & Viscountess, Baron & Baroness, right? Now I know I've asked you before where the whole but all of those can be addressed as "Lord" & "Lady", and some can be a lord and lady without being a member of the peerage. The family in my novel are very well to do, but they are not extravagant, by no means a Duke/Duchess. The estates I am using are very big and extravagant but I am scaling them down a bit. So far I've only been referring to the parents as Lord and Lady, should I make them a member of the peerage or would it be believable that they are a wealthy family that is not? I like the sound of Lord of Roseleigh better than Viscount of Roseleigh. Not certain where to go by this, there's not a whole lot out there about Brentwood, I knew it was an old, small town close to London around 1798, and from pictures I've seen on the internet very picturesque with a nearby forest. Whatever help you can give Andi, or others would be great. AM I even anywhere on track here (shrugs shoulders)? Mr. Green

Sorry it's taken so long to get back to you I've been really busy this summer.

As far as i know a courtesy title is just that. It's not passed on and is usually given to younger children of the Lord but not Knights only children of the peerage. They are common folk like you and me unless they marry into a title or are awarded one. Very Happy
