This is so exciting Carol. I'm so pleased for you. I'm going to see if I can download it. My son said I should be able to he is doing a course with computers and said it wont take up much memory. I will let you know how I get on. It will be much cheaper this way if it works but I still want a hard copy for my bookshelf when it gets released in November. I'm also going to see if I can get a digital reader on duty free when I go through Hong Kong or even into Canada. I cant get one here unless I order it over the internet. If I get one I'll buy all of KEWs then I can always have them at the ready where ever I am. Heres hoping anyway Smile

Hi Brony,

That's great. It might take a while but I think many people will adjust to the ideas of readers, of course these devices will never replace the smell of the printed page. There's just something about it. (s)

The Wild Rose Press is conducting a contest to win a free Sony Reader if you want to enter.

I ended up getting a cheap palm pilot that supports adobe pdf on amazon. It ended up being about $30, and with the way the past few weeks have been going I think I might be using it for scheduling too, been busy.
While I was looking for a reader I came across a lot of information regarding why readers haven't taken on, and I honestly think that they never will be the only source for books, like how mp3 players and ipods have become. With my iPod I was able to use all my cds (and I have a lot) to put on it, and not have to buy from iTunes. But with eBooks you can't just take a physical book you already have and put it on a reader, you have to rebuy it. I guess there were quite a few eBook companies that went belly-up within the past couple of years because the public didn't take to readers.

Cale, can you show me the palm pilot that you bought and does it have a back light? The kindle does not have a back light so you still need a light source, i.e. lamp, etc unless you are reading in sunlight. That is a big disadvantage for me. You would still need other light to read the kindle. I wanted one with a back light so I could read it in the dark and turn my bed light off.

I just got it today Jeanne, and I need to download adobe to it (oh joy what fun, more computer stuff) but I don't think it has a back light. I'll look up which one it is and give you the link. I got the second cheapest one, because the cheapest didn't have a wall charger, it only had a car charger.

It seems the ones I looked at had back lights but what do I know. I know Tina has a palm pilot. Maybe I could ask her. But send me what you bought if you can find it on Amazon. Yesterday, we lost power because of the storms and I have comcast digital voice. I lost the phones!!! It is supposed to have a battery backup for the phones but it didn't work. Anyways, the boys cell phones are destroyed and mine was almost dead! I couldn't figure out how to charge it up. Finally a thought occurred to me. I can charge it up in the car. What a novel idea! I had never charged the cells in the car. It took me about 30 minutes to figure that one out. DUH!!!! Have fun downloading adobe. Did it come with software or are you going on the web to download it from there? I sure would like to get one but I need a backlight. Otherwise it would be useless for me. I don't like those lights that attach to books. They are a pain. I don't know why they don't make the sony and kindle readers with backlights. Just stupid to me. They are expensive so why not a back light. I wouldn't spend $400 on one anyways but for that type of money, you would think they would put a backlight on it.

Jeanne, I got a "PalmOne m505 Color Handheld" for 32.99, with shipping the total cost was 38.98 on amazon. In the daylight it didn't seem to have a backlight, but I checked to see if it had finished charging last night before bed, and it does, because I was able to read in the dark. I am going to try to put adobe on it today, so I'll let you know how it works. If something goes wrong I wouldn't want you to get one and then we'd both be stuck with something crappy. However I have a good feeling.

OK, Jeanne I'm up and running. Once I finish Flame I'll be able to finally read Carol's book! I'm going to tell you what little I know now because I'll forget. Now my sister did a bunch of stuff that I have no clue what was going on, it involved getting the palm desktop set up on the computer. SHe couldn't get adobe on the pilot (you might be lucky and already have adobe on yours should you get one), so I googled "how to put adobe pdf on palm m505" and went to this site: http://www.a-s-t.org/files/pdf/patient_education/english/DownloadInstruct.pdf and followed the adobe link provided there. You follow instructions picking out version, langauge and then I had to run it because I couldn't find the icon that represented the palm pilot in the My Computer section to save it (all the other devices were accounted for-weird I thought). It will run and then afterwards ask if you want to save, once again you can't. I think I just licked the synch button on the palm and Wa-La! There's adobe on the main menu. Now it took some more figuring as to how to get Cost Of Freedom on, but I think I ended up doing it by choosing to open it with Palm Desktop, it showed up under one of the palm program pages, so I sunched and there it was on my pilot. Hope it's been helpful, I am lousy at the offical computer lingo, and quite surprized I was able to do it by myself. Maybe I am a computer whiz after all? Well, let's not go that far.

I looked at the directions, etc. It is a wonder you got adobe put on there with these crummy directions. But hey, it works and that's all that matters. Did you notice on the page of Amazon that there is a manual there for your palm pilot. Here is the page.

http://www.amazon.com/Palm-3C80801U-PalmOne-Color-Handheld/dp/B00005AWCL

It is under product details. Just click on product manual. Maybe that would be helpful for you. I looked at it but didn't see anything about adobe but it could be in there. These palm pilots are supposed to have the adobe already in it but maybe it is with the software. I don't know. I'm no computer whiz myself. If I bought one of these, I would buy the one with the cradle to charge it up from the computer. I have a really dumb question. When you charge things in your car, like a cell phone, does it wear the battery down if the car is off?? I know, stupid, but I've never charged anything in the car other than the other day when the power was out. But it wasn't out for too long so I just charged the cell in the house.

Anyways, I'm going to look into a palm pilot but for sure I still don't know what to get!!! It is so damn confusing. I hate to buy something and then be at a loss on how to work it. How does the screen look for reading in the dark. Is it bright enough?

First off, Congratualtions to Carol on #8!
OK, Jeanne the amazon manual will be really helpful, Thanks! I'm thinking that maybe since this palm is from 2001 or 2002 that maybe Adobe wasn't a feature then. I'd suggest if you can't get it to work, grab one of them boys of yours (they're good with technology aren't they?) and play around with it. In all it took my sister about an hour to do the desktop crap and she downloaded just the regular Adobe Acrobat to our computer. By googleing I was able to find Adobe Acrobat for Palm OS whatever, and it only took me about 40 minutes to get everything on it successfully.
Get the cradle, mine has a cord with both UBS computer stick and an outlet on it so you can charge it in the wall and have it connected (or not) to your computer at the same time.
As for brightness I discovered if you hold the power button it will turn on/off the back light, which I think it bright enough for me, but I have 25/20 eyesight. The only I thing I don't like about it is that you have to use the pen to scroll down which I foresee being annoying.
